Cheyenne-Eagle Butte junior Dysan Lends His Horse has had his sights set on a state championship in the 1600 meter run all track and field season, and it took everything he had to accomplish that goal.
With about 200 meters to go in the 1600 meter race at the state meet in Sioux Falls on Saturday, Lends His Horse and West Central’s Tim Weber had separated from the pack. It was then that Dysan found an extra gear for the homestretch, edging Weber by about two seconds and claiming the Class A state championship in the mile run.
Lends His Horse’s time was 4:32.50, with Weber (4:34.49) and Tea’s Brady Ihnen (4:34.79) close behind.
“It was really fun,” Lends His Horse said. “There was a big pack through the second lap, and by the last lap it was just me and Weber. We battled it out for first.”
Of all things, the large video board above the track at Howard Wood gave Dysan the incentive the push just a bit harder down the stretch. With the crowd roaring through the final lap, Lends His Horse looked up at the board and saw Weber -- and the pack -- hot on his heels. That was all the incentive he needed to dig deep and kick it in for the final stretch.
C-EB freshman Seven Annis placed 11th overall in the 1600 with a time of 4:51.12.
Boys 3200
Jared Noyes couldn’t catch C-EB’s Lends His Horse in the 1600, but the senior from Redfield/Doland finished the boys Class A 3200 meter run in impressive fashion by claiming the state title in that eight-lap race. Noyes’ time of 9:46.50 was good enough to edge Lends His Horse, who finished in 9:48.29. It was just the two of them coming down the stretch, as they were the only competitors out of 22 who finished under the 10-minute mark.
“The whole race it was just me and Noyes,” Lends His Horse said. “We changed the lead about four times but in the last 75 meters he just got me.”
At last year’s state track meet, Dysan placed 4th in the 1600 and 3rd in the 3200.
Boys 800
Seven Annis represented C-EB well in the 800 meter run, as he placed 9th out of 16. Running through rain showers, Annis ran to a time of 2:06.94 and was in the middle of a closely-grouped pack that saw places 4th through 11th all within two seconds of each other. Brennan Witt of Custer won the event with a time of 2:02.01.
